Focus on students: Essential questions

Students will understand:

At the end of this brief unit, students will understand the characteristics of the state of Bavaria.  Students will understand the components of the German school system and the differences between this system and their own school system. Students will also understand the patterns of use of the spoken past tense in German.

What characteristics exemplify a typical Bavarian village?

What are the components of the German school system?

How does the German school system differ than our own?

What role does the German school system play in German society?

How do Germans compose spoken past tense?

How do past tense grammatical structures of German differ from English past tense structures?

How do the use of authentic German texts affect my understanding of German systems and culture?

 

What key knowledge and skills will students acquire as a result of this unit?

At the end of this unit, students will know the characteristics of the state of Bavaria and the traditional stereotypes associated with this state.  Students will be able to recognize typical Bavarian cities, such as Nabburg.  Students will be able to describe the components of the German school system and will know the effects the school system has on German society.  Students will be able to compare and contrast the German school system with the American school system.  Students will be able to explain the usage patterns of the spoken past tense in German and will be able to use this grammatical structure in everyday speech.
